Homicide detectives are awaiting autopsy results after the Friday morning discovery.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A man was found dead inside a suitcase Friday morning in Kensington, prompting a Philadelphia police homicide investigation on a residential block near East Hilton Street.
The discovery brought officers to the 600 block of East Hilton Street around 9:25 a.m. Police said they found an adult male inside the luggage and that emergency responders pronounced him dead within minutes. His identity was not released.
Authorities classified the case as a suspicious death while they await findings from the medical examiner. Police have not said whether the man had visible injuries, how long he may have been dead or whether the suitcase was moved from another location before it was found.
Residents told local reporters the gray suitcase appeared in the alley sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning. Neighbor Howard James said he noticed it after stepping out behind his home. “Now I can say I’ve seen everything,” James said, describing an odor near the suitcase.
Angela Alexander, another neighbor, said she saw the luggage the previous evening and was uneasy about it. She said the alley often draws drug activity and that the discovery made her question whether she could remain in the neighborhood.
The investigation is being handled by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit. Detectives are expected to review the scene, seek surveillance video from nearby properties and wait for the autopsy to clarify whether the death was a homicide, accident or another manner of death.
No arrests had been announced by Friday night. Police said the man’s name, cause of death and any possible motive remained unknown as investigators worked to piece together the final hours before the suitcase was found.
