Girlfriend, Child Rescued Before Deputies Fatally Shoot Armed Man

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said a woman and young child were removed before the deadly confrontation.

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — Sumter County deputies shot and killed a man Friday after an hourslong standoff at a Lake Panasoffkee home where officials said he barricaded himself with a knife after a domestic dispute.

The shooting brought a large law enforcement response to Northwest 40th Terrace, near County Road 400. Deputies said the man’s girlfriend and a small child were removed from the home before the standoff turned deadly. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is reviewing the deputy-involved shooting.

Deputies were called to the home shortly after 1 a.m. Friday for a report of a suicidal man armed with a knife after a domestic incident, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said. The man went into a bedroom and refused to come out, officials said. A SWAT team and crisis negotiators responded and spent several hours trying to speak with him. “Negotiations eventually broke down,” the sheriff’s office said in describing the moments before deputies fired.

Officials said the man made threatening statements and then charged at SWAT members while holding a knife. Deputies first used less-lethal rounds in an effort to stop him, according to a local report citing authorities. When the man continued forward, deputies opened fire. Emergency workers and deputies tried to render aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name had not been released Friday while officials worked to notify next of kin.

Crime scene tape surrounded the mobile home later Friday as investigators and the medical examiner remained at the property. Aerial video showed deputies and investigators moving around the home on Northwest 40th Terrace. The sheriff’s office said the woman and child had been safely evacuated earlier in the incident. No deputies were reported injured, and officials did not release the names of the deputies who fired.

The sheriff’s office said deputies had been called to the home once before, in 2025. Officials also said the agency had not had a deputy-involved shooting since 2024. The new case will be reviewed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, a standard step after shootings involving law enforcement officers in Florida. The sheriff’s office has not said how many deputies fired or how many shots were discharged.

Neighbors described the family as quiet and said the heavy police presence was unsettling. One neighbor said the area usually felt safe and that the family mostly kept to itself. “It feels kind of freaked out,” the neighbor said. “I come in here thinking it’s a safe place, and I never had any trouble.” The scene stayed active for hours after the shooting as investigators gathered evidence.

The investigation remained active Saturday. Officials had not announced a public briefing, released body camera information or identified the man as of the latest update.
