San Antonio Double Murder Case Turns on Alleged Instagram Setup

Police say the suspect lured two teenagers to a San Antonio apartment complex before they were fatally shot.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A 21-year-old woman has been charged with capital murder after investigators said she used Instagram messages to lure two teenagers to a South Side apartment complex where they were robbed and shot to death in 2022.

San Antonio police arrested Angie Morales this week in connection with the deaths of Gregorio Ricardo Cordova-Mejia, 19, and Angel Ray Garcia, 15. The killings remained unsolved for nearly four years before investigators said new information from a confidential informant helped revive the case. Court records allege Morales coordinated with others to set up the teens before the fatal shooting outside the Union Pines apartment complex.

According to an arrest affidavit, officers responded shortly before 3 a.m. on July 29, 2022, after reports of gunfire at the apartment complex in the 1700 block of Pleasanton Road. Police found Cordova-Mejia and Garcia suffering from multiple gunshot wounds near Building 28. Both teenagers died at the scene. Investigators recovered several 9 mm shell casings and reviewed surveillance footage from nearby buildings as detectives began piecing together the final moments before the shooting.

Authorities said Cordova-Mejia had exchanged Instagram messages with Morales minutes before arriving at the complex. Detectives allege Morales invited the teens to meet her there and told them she was “stepping out” shortly before shots rang out. Witnesses later reported seeing two men running from the area immediately after the gunfire. Investigators said phone records placed Morales near the apartment complex around the time of the killings. Morales denied involvement when questioned by detectives, according to court documents.

The case drew attention in San Antonio as relatives of the victims spent years searching for answers. Family members organized public appeals, posted signs around the city and pushed for more information about who killed the teenagers. Police said the investigation remained active during that period, though few details were released publicly. Investigators later received information from a confidential informant who claimed Morales played a role in arranging the robbery that ended in the shootings.

Morales was 17 at the time of the killings but was arrested as an adult because of the severity of the charge. She is accused of capital murder involving multiple victims, one of the most serious charges under Texas law. Jail records show she is being held in Bexar County on a $250,000 bond. Authorities have not publicly identified the men investigators believe carried out the shootings, and police have not said whether additional arrests are expected in the case.

Residents near the apartment complex said the shooting left lasting fear in the neighborhood. Some neighbors recalled hearing a burst of gunfire followed by screaming and sirens in the early morning darkness. “It was chaos outside,” one resident told investigators during the original inquiry. Friends and relatives of the victims later described the teenagers as close companions who were often together around the South Side community. Garcia’s relatives said the 15-year-old enjoyed sports and music, while Cordova-Mejia’s family remembered him as protective of younger relatives.

The investigation remains open as detectives continue reviewing evidence tied to the killings. Authorities said prosecutors will move forward with the capital murder case against Morales while investigators determine whether others involved in the alleged robbery scheme could also face charges.
