Boyfriend Shot Pregnant 17-Year-Old Visiting San Diego

The victim was 32 weeks pregnant, and her newborn was delivered after the shooting.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — San Diego homicide detectives arrested an Arizona man Saturday after police said he shot and killed his pregnant teenage girlfriend outside a Bay Park vacation rental.

The shooting left a 17-year-old girl dead and her newborn child in critical condition. Police said the victim was visiting San Diego with relatives from Arizona when the suspect arrived separately and met her outside the rental in the 4900 block of Gardena Avenue.

The first emergency calls came in at about 1:10 a.m. Saturday. Police said callers reported a shooting, and responding officers found the teen unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers began emergency aid before paramedics took her to a hospital. Doctors performed an emergency cesarean section because the teen was about 32 weeks pregnant.

Police said the mother died at the hospital. The newborn survived the delivery but remained in critical condition. Authorities did not release the victim’s name because she was a minor and because family notifications were still part of the investigation.

Investigators identified the suspect as Trevon Williams, 19, of Arizona. Police said he fled from Gardena Avenue after the shooting and headed toward a nearby canyon. Officers searched the area and found him hiding near the 4900 block of September Street at about 3 a.m. He was arrested without incident.

A semiautomatic handgun was recovered at the time of the arrest, police said. Detectives continued collecting evidence from the shooting scene and the area where Williams was found. Police did not release details about the weapon, including whether it had been matched to the shooting.

The killing brought a homicide investigation into a normally quiet Bay Park area near Mission Bay. The neighborhood includes single-family homes, apartments and vacation rentals. Police said the victim and several relatives had been staying in one of those rentals when Williams arrived in San Diego.

Williams was expected to be booked into San Diego County jail on suspicion of murder. Formal charges would be decided by prosecutors after reviewing the police case. No court date had been confirmed in the police update.

Detectives had not released a motive or said whether anyone else was being sought. The case remained open Saturday as investigators interviewed witnesses and worked to build a complete timeline.

The newborn remained in critical condition at a hospital. Police said the next step is continued evidence review by homicide detectives and a charging decision by prosecutors.
