Teen Killed Moments After Stepping Off School Bus

The killing happened Friday afternoon near North Sixth and Emerald streets.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A Harrisburg school community was grieving Sunday after police said a 15-year-old student was shot and killed moments after getting off a school bus Friday afternoon.

The boy’s death turned a routine trip home from school into a homicide investigation. Harrisburg police said officers were called about 3:15 p.m. May 29 to North Sixth and Emerald streets for a report of a shooting. Officers found the student wounded, gave aid and secured the area before he was taken to a hospital.

The student later died from his injuries. His name has not been released by officials. The Harrisburg School District said schools in the area were placed on lockdown as a safety step after the shooting. Officials said no other students were hurt, and the remaining children on the bus were taken home.

Police later arrested Jeremiah Moran, 16. District Attorney Fran Chardo said Moran was charged with first-degree murder. According to court records cited by authorities, Moran admitted to police that he shot the 15-year-old. Investigators said video evidence also showed Moran firing a handgun. Police have not announced a motive.

Moran was also charged with two firearms offenses and was denied bail. He was being held in Dauphin County Prison. Authorities said he will be tried as an adult because Pennsylvania law allows adult prosecution for juveniles charged with murder. Court proceedings are expected to determine the next steps in the case.

Mayor Wanda Williams said the city was heartbroken. “No student should have to fear for their safety on the way home from school,” Williams said. She called for the community to support the victim’s family, classmates and neighbors as police continue the investigation.

Superintendent Benjamin Henry said the district was mourning the shooting along with another recent student death in a car crash. Henry said he refused to accept violence as something children must endure. The district said grief counselors would be available Monday for students and staff.

Police listed the case as a current homicide investigation. Officials said they are continuing to seek information as the criminal case against Moran moves forward in Dauphin County.
