Sheriff’s officials said the victim and suspect appeared to know each other.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A woman was arrested Saturday after a 23-year-old Milwaukee man was fatally shot at Center Street Park, where a large gathering was taking place, authorities said.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded shortly after 6:45 p.m. May 30 to the park at 65th Street and Center Street. They were joined by Milwaukee police and Milwaukee Fire Department crews. First responders found the man dead with at least two gunshot wounds.
The sheriff’s office said a 25-year-old Milwaukee woman was taken into custody with two firearms. Officials said investigators believe she and the victim knew each other. The agency did not release the woman’s name, the victim’s name or a possible motive.
The shooting occurred during what authorities described as a large picnic-style social gathering. No other injuries were reported. Officers and deputies secured the park as investigators worked to collect evidence and speak with people who were there.
Authorities have not said whether charges have been filed. In Wisconsin, prosecutors generally review police reports before making a charging decision. The case could move next to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office if investigators seek criminal charges.
The shooting added to a violent Saturday in Milwaukee, where police were also investigating other shootings that left people dead or injured. Officials have not said the Center Street Park case was connected to any other incident.
As of Sunday, the investigation was ongoing. Sheriff’s officials said no additional injuries were reported and no further arrests had been announced.
