Woman Fatally Stabbed On MARTA Train In Atlanta

A suspect was arrested after rail service was halted at Oakland City Station.

ATLANTA — A woman was stabbed to death Saturday on a MARTA train near Oakland City Station, and transit police arrested a suspect at the scene after officers responded around noon, officials said.

The killing briefly stopped normal rail service at the southwest Atlanta station and sent MARTA police into an active investigation. Emergency medical workers treated the woman on scene, but she died from her injuries. Officials had not released the victim’s name, the suspect’s name or a possible motive as of Sunday.

MARTA said officers responded after a report of a stabbing on a rail car near Oakland City Station. The agency said several bystanders witnessed the attack. “This appears to be a senseless act of violence, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” MARTA said in a statement.

The response forced trains to stop serving Oakland City for several hours while police worked at the station. MARTA arranged bus shuttles between Lakewood, Oakland City and West End to move passengers around the closure. At Lakewood, northbound trains boarded on the southbound platform side while the service plan was in place.

Normal rail operations later resumed, but the stabbing left riders shaken. The Oakland City stop serves MARTA’s red and gold rail lines and sits southwest of downtown Atlanta. The station was also the site of another violent case in April, when a 16-year-old was fatally shot there and two suspects were later arrested.

The latest attack came about a week after another person was stabbed at Georgia State Station. That victim survived. MARTA said police were still investigating the Oakland City killing and remained focused on rider and employee safety. Officials had not said whether charges had been filed against the person taken into custody.

Some riders said the fatal stabbing added to worries about safety on the rail system. Mantonio Huff, a MARTA rider, told FOX 5 Atlanta that the system needs more security. “It’s crazy,” Huff said. “Just need more security, for real.”

The investigation remained active Sunday, with the victim and suspect still unidentified publicly. The next major update is expected when MARTA police release names, charges or more details about what led to the stabbing.
