Houston Man Fatally Shot Hours After Police Released Him

The victim had been detained for questioning before officers released him, HPD said.

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston homicide detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a man found wounded Sunday night on Canal Street after police said he had been detained and released in an earlier nearby trespassing case.

The shooting was reported around 9 p.m. in the 7200 block of Canal Street in the Greater East End. Officers found the man on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the case began earlier Sunday when officers were sent to a nearby home for suspicious activity. Investigators said officers found one man in the backyard and another in the front yard. One of the men was charged with trespassing. The second man was questioned and released.

Houston police Lt. J.P. Horelica said the man released from the earlier call was the same person later found shot. “At this time, it’s unknown if the two incidents are related, but it is the same male,” Horelica said.

Authorities had not released the victim’s name, a suspect description or a possible motive by Monday. Police said the events between the earlier detention and the shooting remain a key part of the investigation. Detectives were also reviewing whether anyone saw the victim before gunfire was reported.

The East End case adds another open homicide investigation for Houston police, with detectives trying to separate confirmed facts from the unanswered questions around the earlier call. Police have not said where the arrested trespassing suspect was taken or whether that person is considered connected to the shooting.

The investigation remained active Monday, with no arrest announced and no public suspect information released.
