Young Father Killed During Child’s Birthday Party At Park

Family identified the victim as 22-year-old Pepe Sikisi-Belle Jr.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A 22-year-old Milwaukee man was fatally shot Saturday evening at Center Street Park during a birthday gathering for his young son, authorities and family members said.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called about 6:47 p.m. to reports of gunfire during a large picnic-style gathering. First responders found the man with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. He died at the scene.

Family members identified him as Pepe Sikisi-Belle Jr., also known to loved ones as PJ. His mother, Marissa Bopilo, said the family had gathered to celebrate his son’s fourth birthday when an argument broke out. Bopilo said she received a phone call telling her to hurry to the park because her son had been shot.

Investigators arrested a 25-year-old Milwaukee woman at the scene. The sheriff’s office said she had two firearms. Authorities said they believe the woman and Sikisi-Belle knew each other. No other injuries were reported, and officials have not released a motive.

Family members said Sikisi-Belle leaves behind two young children, including a daughter who is set to turn 5 later this month. Bopilo said her son was studying at Milwaukee Area Technical College and had talked about becoming a police officer, lawyer or district attorney.

“My son was a good man,” Bopilo said. “He always was a family person.” She said he wanted a better life for his children and the people around him.

The investigation remained active Monday. Authorities had not announced formal charges or a court date for the arrested woman.
