One Dead, Two Teenagers Injured After Shooting Breaks Out on Cleveland Block

A 23-year-old died after the Cleveland shooting, while two injured teens were taken to MetroHealth Hospital, authorities said.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland police were investigating a deadly shooting Sunday on West 48th Street after a 23-year-old man died and two teenagers were hurt in gunfire that followed a fight, authorities said.

The case unfolded on the city’s West Side after officers received a shots-fired call about 2 p.m. in the 3500 block of West 48th Street. Police said the shooting happened during an altercation involving a group of people. By Sunday evening, detectives had detained an adult man believed to be the suspect, and the homicide unit had joined the investigation after the oldest victim was pronounced dead at MetroHealth Hospital.

Police said the Second District was the first to respond to reports of gunfire on the block. Investigators later said three people had been struck: a 23-year-old man, a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old. EMS crews transported all three to MetroHealth Hospital. The 23-year-old did not survive. Officials said the 16-year-old was in critical condition and the 15-year-old was in serious condition, leaving two teenage victims still hospitalized as detectives worked to reconstruct the encounter.

The early account from police pointed to a fight among a group of people before shots were fired, but many of the case’s basic facts had not been publicly answered by the end of the day. Authorities had not said what started the dispute, whether the shooting involved one gunman or more than one, or how the suspect was located and detained. Officers also had not released the victims’ identities in the first reports, a common step while families are being notified and the investigation remains active.

Detectives stayed on West 48th Street after the shooting, processing the scene and following leads. The Cleveland police homicide unit responded once the hospital death was confirmed, shifting the investigation from a shooting with injuries to a killing case. Although police said an adult man believed to be involved was in custody, they did not immediately announce charges in the first public updates. That left the legal status of the detainee, and any possible court action, unclear as of the latest reporting.

What was clear by Sunday night was the scale of the damage: one young man dead, two teens badly wounded and an entire neighborhood left with a major crime scene in place for hours. The initial police summary was brief and cautious, reflecting how early the investigation still was. More detailed findings, including witness accounts, forensic evidence and any charging decision, were still expected to come later as detectives continued the case.

The investigation remained active in the latest reports, with police still piecing together the fight, the shooting and the role of the detained man. No additional official updates on charges or identities had been announced.
