Prosecutors Say Cheektowaga Man Killed Wife, Children and Clerk

Saleh Mohamed is accused in four shooting deaths across two Erie County scenes.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Prosecutors said Tuesday that a Cheektowaga man accused of killing his wife and two children also shot and killed a Buffalo store clerk shortly before police found the family dead.

Saleh Mohamed, 29, appeared in court after police and prosecutors linked the killings at a Grant Street store in Buffalo and a home on Ellen Drive in Cheektowaga. He is charged with first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder.

The timeline began shortly after 2:30 p.m. Monday, when Buffalo police responded to the 1000 block of Grant Street for a shooting. Officers found a 43-year-old man shot in the chest. He died at the store. Around 3:30 p.m., Cheektowaga police received a welfare check call for the Ellen Drive home, where officers found a woman and two children dead from gunshot wounds.

Authorities described the woman as Mohamed’s 26-year-old wife and the children as his sons, ages 4 and 3. Officials said the victims’ names were being withheld until family notifications were complete. Mohamed was arrested after he returned to the Cheektowaga home, authorities said.

Erie County District Attorney Michael Keane said investigators are still working to determine what led to the killings and whether Mohamed knew the man killed in Buffalo. “Domestic violence is a scourge,” Keane said. “These crimes are horrific and this is the worst of the worst.”

Police said there was no ongoing danger to the public after the arrest. Still, investigators remained at the Ellen Drive home Monday night, and Buffalo police said they were sharing information with Cheektowaga police as the two scenes were reviewed.

Mohamed was remanded without bail. Prosecutors said the most serious charge carries a possible sentence of life in prison without parole. Additional charges may be filed as investigators review evidence from both locations.

The next major step in the case is scheduled for Friday, June 5, when Mohamed is due back for felony hearings in Cheektowaga Town Court and Buffalo City Court.
