A Cleveland man died after police said he ran from a crash and shot another person.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland police are investigating a deadly chain of events that began with a vehicle pursuit Wednesday and ended with a crash, a shooting and a death in Slavic Village.
The man who died was identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner as Jumel Lewis, 23, of Cleveland. Police said the incident began when Cleveland officers were asked to help Newburgh Heights police, who were pursuing a vehicle. The chase ended after Lewis crashed near East 74th Street and Harvard Avenue.
After the crash, Lewis left the area on foot and ran south, police said. Investigators said he shot another person near the 7400 block of Clement Avenue. That person survived and was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Police did not immediately say whether Lewis knew the person who was shot or whether the shooting happened during a confrontation.
Police said Lewis continued into the 7500 block of Park Avenue and shot himself in the backyard of a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Other people hurt in the crash were listed in stable condition. Officials had not released their names or the full number of people injured in the crash.
The investigation is being split between Cleveland police units. The Accident Investigation Unit is reviewing the crash, including the vehicles struck near East 74th Street and Harvard Avenue. Cleveland police are separately handling the shooting investigation tied to Lewis’ death and the wounded victim on Clement Avenue.
The incident brought police activity to a residential part of Slavic Village, where the pursuit left a crash scene at one location and shooting scenes nearby. Authorities had not released body camera video, 911 audio or a detailed timeline by Thursday.
Police said the wounded shooting victim and crash victims were stable. Investigators had not said when additional findings would be released.
