Police said two gunmen fired into a group standing outside early Friday.
CHICAGO, Ill. — Two men were killed and five other people were wounded early Friday when two gunmen opened fire on a crowd in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, Chicago police said.
The shooting happened about 12:26 a.m. in the 5100 block of South Wood Street on the Southwest Side. Police said the attackers walked up to a group outside, fired several shots and fled. No arrests had been announced Friday morning, and Area One detectives were investigating.
Police said one man was shot in the head, chest and leg and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Another man was shot in the abdomen and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. Both later died from their injuries. Their names and ages had not been released.
Five others were taken to hospitals. A 23-year-old woman was shot in the head and was listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. A 54-year-old man was shot in the ankle and was in fair condition at Stroger. A 30-year-old woman was shot in the thigh and hand and was in fair condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Two other men also survived. Police said a 32-year-old man was shot in the torso and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. A 21-year-old man was shot in the back and also was listed in good condition at the same hospital.
Investigators had not released a motive. Police also had not said whether the victims were targeted or whether the gunmen knew anyone in the group. The shooting added to a recent string of gun violence reports in Back of the Yards, a Southwest Side neighborhood where residents have faced repeated police responses to shootings.
Cook County Crime Stoppers said it was offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to arrests. Executive Director Paul Rutherford called the shooting another example of “senseless gun violence” and said families and neighborhoods were being left with the damage.
As of Friday morning, detectives were still working to identify the gunmen and confirm the events that led to the shooting. The next public update is expected when police release suspect information, charges or the names of the men who died.
