Father Killed While Helping Son Recover Stolen Truck

Authorities said a father and another man were shot after locating the truck.

HOUSTON, Texas — A stolen truck investigation turned deadly Saturday in north Houston when a father helping recover his son’s Chevrolet Silverado was shot after a crash near Airline Drive and Interstate 610, deputies said.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the Silverado had been taken at gunpoint in east Harris County. The owner’s father and a friend later tracked the vehicle to the North Loop area. Their search ended with a crash, gunfire and a search for two people who fled from the stolen pickup.

Investigators said the father and friend were driving separate vehicles when they found the Silverado near Airline Drive. A crash involving the stolen pickup and the vehicles driven by the two men disabled the truck. Deputies said a male suspect and a female suspect then left the Silverado and ran toward a Chevron gas station close to the scene.

Shots were fired after the crash. The father was struck and killed, deputies said. The friend was also wounded. Officials did not immediately identify the dead man, the injured man or the truck owner. Authorities also had not released a detailed suspect description or said whether a weapon had been recovered.

The scene sits in a busy part of north Houston where Airline Drive crosses near the North Loop. Deputies blocked off parts of the area while investigators examined the crash site, the stolen pickup and nearby businesses that may have captured video of the suspects leaving the scene.

The case is being handled as a homicide tied to an armed vehicle theft. Investigators were still working to confirm the full timeline from the original carjacking in east Harris County to the crash and shooting near Interstate 610. No charges had been announced because no arrests had been made.

As of Sunday, June 7, deputies were still looking for the man and woman who fled after the crash. The investigation’s next step is expected to focus on witness statements, surveillance video and the public release of suspect details.
