Investigators say a suspect disguised as a package courier targeted a man at his front door.
KENNESAW, Ga. — A Georgia man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he disguised himself as a delivery driver, knocked on a homeowner’s door and then opened fire, seriously wounding the victim in what investigators describe as a targeted attack.
Kennesaw police say the shooting happened May 6 at a home on Smith Drive. Authorities identified the suspect as 33-year-old Jacob Kevinsson, who investigators say is the former boyfriend of the victim’s current girlfriend. The case has drawn attention because of the elaborate disguise police say was used to gain access to the victim before the shooting.
According to investigators, homeowner John Rice answered a knock at his front door after a man carrying a cardboard box appeared to be making a delivery. Police said the visitor asked Rice to confirm his identity. Once Rice identified himself, the suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds through the cardboard box, which officers say concealed both the weapon and part of the shooter’s appearance.
Authorities said Rice was struck four times during the attack. Emergency responders rushed him to a hospital for treatment. Police have not publicly released detailed information about his medical condition, but investigators said he survived the shooting. Detectives believe the encounter was planned in advance and was not a random act of violence.
Investigators quickly began reviewing evidence from the scene, including witness accounts and surveillance footage from the surrounding area. Police said the suspect fled in a Toyota Corolla after the shooting. Detectives traced the vehicle and later located Kevinsson. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Cobb County Jail.
The allegations have raised concerns about increasingly sophisticated methods used in targeted crimes. Investigators say the suspect’s disguise allowed him to approach the home without immediately raising suspicion. By carrying a package and presenting himself as a delivery worker, police believe he was able to persuade the victim to come to the door before the shooting occurred.
Authorities have not released details about what led up to the alleged attack beyond identifying a personal connection between the suspect and the victim’s girlfriend. Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the relationship and whether additional planning took place before the shooting.
Kevinsson faces multiple felony charges connected to the shooting. Court records show he is being held without bond while the criminal case proceeds. Prosecutors are expected to present additional evidence as the investigation continues and formal court proceedings move forward.
For neighbors, the incident shattered the sense of security typically associated with a quiet residential street. Residents described being shocked that a routine knock at the door could allegedly turn into a violent confrontation. The unusual nature of the alleged disguise has become a central focus of the investigation.
The case remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence. Authorities say additional details could emerge during upcoming court hearings as prosecutors outline the evidence supporting the charges.
