Investigators say a suspected robbery may have led to the fatal shooting of a young man in north Harris County.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old woman in connection with the shooting death of a 21-year-old man at a north Harris County apartment complex, bringing new developments to a homicide investigation that began in late May.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigators announced that Alajai Scott has been charged with murder in the death of Devonta Martin. The arrest followed several weeks of investigative work after Martin was found fatally wounded in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Imperial Valley Drive. Officials say the investigation remains open and could result in additional arrests as detectives continue gathering evidence.
The shooting occurred on May 22 when deputies were dispatched to reports of gunfire at the apartment complex. Responding officers located Martin suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives spent the following days reconstructing the events leading up to the shooting. Investigators reviewed evidence collected from the parking lot and sought information from people who may have witnessed the violence. The case remained unsolved publicly until authorities announced Scott’s arrest nearly three weeks later.
Law enforcement officials say Martin may have been the victim of a robbery attempt. Investigators believe the encounter escalated into gunfire, leaving the 21-year-old dead in the apartment complex parking area. Authorities have not released detailed information describing the sequence of events or explaining what role Scott allegedly played. The sheriff’s office has also not disclosed whether Scott knew Martin before the shooting. Those details are expected to emerge through court proceedings and continued investigation. Officials have emphasized that the case remains active and that detectives continue following leads connected to the homicide.
The possibility of multiple suspects has become one of the most significant aspects of the investigation. Detectives said evidence points to the possible involvement of a second shooter. Authorities have not identified any additional suspects publicly, nor have they announced further charges. Cases involving multiple participants often require extensive review of physical evidence, witness testimony and digital records. Investigators appear to be taking that approach as they continue building the case. The allegation that robbery served as a motive may also shape the direction of the prosecution if additional participants are identified.
Scott was booked into the Harris County Jail following her arrest. Court officials deferred a decision regarding bond to criminal court, where future hearings are expected. Prosecutors will now begin presenting evidence as the case advances through the judicial system. Murder charges carry significant penalties under Texas law, but the allegations against Scott have not yet been tested in court. As the legal process unfolds, investigators are expected to continue coordinating with prosecutors while pursuing any remaining leads related to the shooting.
The apartment complex where the shooting occurred became the focus of an intensive law enforcement response on the night Martin was killed. Residents watched as deputies secured the scene, interviewed witnesses and searched for evidence. The arrest provides the first major breakthrough in a case that remained unresolved for weeks. Community members continue to await answers about exactly what happened and whether additional arrests will follow as detectives complete their investigation.
Authorities say the homicide investigation remains ongoing. Additional court hearings and investigative updates are expected as prosecutors and detectives continue working to determine whether others were involved in Martin’s death.
