Osceola County detectives are investigating the deaths as the medical examiner reviews the case.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Two 5-year-old twin sisters from the Atlanta area died June 12 after they were pulled from a pool at a short-term rental home in Kissimmee, according to Florida authorities.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said emergency crews responded shortly after 11 a.m. and found the girls unresponsive in the water. The children were airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where they were pronounced dead later that day.
Authorities said the girls were in Florida with relatives from Georgia. The family had rented the home through VRBO, according to local reporting. Investigators said four adults had gone out to buy food before the children were found, and a 15-year-old was at the property.
Officials have not released the sisters’ names or said how long they were in the pool. The sheriff’s office said detectives were collecting information at the scene. The medical examiner will make the final ruling on the cause and manner of death.
Kim Montes, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said the case shows the risks around pools at vacation properties. She said the county has seen drownings and near drownings tied to rental homes, especially during busy travel periods.
The incident adds to concern across Florida, where dozens of children have died in drownings this year. Kissimmee, near Orlando’s theme park corridor, has many vacation homes with backyard pools used by visiting families.
No arrests or charges had been announced as of Saturday. Detectives were expected to continue interviews and review the circumstances before forwarding findings for any further action.
