Police said city camera video helped show how the late-night confrontation unfolded.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A late-night police response to a shot-up vehicle in Wynnefield turned violent Saturday when a man confronted officers, opened fire and wounded three of them before he was killed, authorities said.
The encounter began near North 54th and Arlington streets after officers were called for a report of a vehicle damaged by gunfire. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the officers were still handling that call when a 57-year-old man began engaging with them on the block. Preliminary information showed the man was not tied to the earlier vehicle shooting, Bethel said.
Surveillance video from city street cameras showed the man moving toward officers during a tense exchange. The footage appeared to show him getting close to several officers and shoving one before being pushed back. Police said officers ordered him to follow commands, but he refused. Moments later, investigators said, he pulled out a gun and gunfire erupted.
One officer was shot in the face, another in the hip and another in the leg, officials said. The officers were rushed to a hospital and were stable Sunday morning. Police said the wounded officers were a sergeant with eight years of service, another eight-year officer and an officer who had been with the department for two years.
The suspect was also shot and taken to Jefferson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m. Authorities had not released his name by Sunday afternoon. Law enforcement sources told local news outlets the man was a retired firefighter. Police had not confirmed that detail in their initial public statements.
Investigators collected nearly 50 pieces of ballistic evidence from the scene. That evidence, along with surveillance video and officer accounts, is expected to help determine the sequence of shots and how many people fired. Police had not said how many officers fired their weapons or how many rounds were discharged.
Bethel said the officers’ training helped them survive the sudden attack. He said they were “totally caught up by a surprise that the man was armed” but were able to return fire and protect themselves. He later said the officers were “in great spirits” at the hospital.
The block remained part of an active investigation Sunday as police worked to confirm the suspect’s identity and the events that led to the shooting. Officials had not announced charges or a final investigative timeline because the suspected gunman was dead and the officer-involved shooting review was still underway.
