Detroit Driver Killed After Masked Teens Flee Warren Police

Police said the pursuit began after officers saw masked occupants inside a Dodge Ram.

WARREN, Mich. — Four juveniles were arrested Thursday after a Warren police chase ended in a fatal crash at 8 Mile Road and Schoenherr Road, killing a 48-year-old Detroit driver, authorities said.

The pursuit began about 2 a.m. when officers spotted a Dodge Ram near Fairfield and Georgiana streets. Warren police said several occupants appeared to be wearing ski masks, and officers attempted a traffic stop. The driver fled instead of pulling over.

Police said the Ram traveled south on Schoenherr Road toward 8 Mile Road. At the intersection, the driver failed to stop for a red light and hit another vehicle that was moving west on 8 Mile. The driver of the struck vehicle was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Five people got out of the Ram and ran after the crash, police said. Officers arrested four occupants, all minors. Authorities did not immediately release their names because of their ages, and police had not said whether the fifth person remained at large.

Investigators are also looking at whether the juveniles are tied to a wider pattern of vehicle crimes in Warren. Police said they believe the suspects may be responsible for up to 15 vehicle-related crimes, including thefts and attempted thefts, over a two-day span.

The case remains under review by Warren detectives and crash reconstruction officers. Police had not announced charges, court dates or a final crash report. The name of the man who died was also withheld pending family notification and further investigation.

The crash brought a deadly end to a pursuit that moved from Warren neighborhoods to one of metro Detroit’s best-known border roads. By Thursday morning, investigators were working to connect the chase, the fatal collision and the suspected theft cases into one timeline.
