Investigators say an overnight dispute ended with a vehicle engulfed in flames and a narrow escape for two sleeping occupants.
HESPERIA, Calif. — Prosecutors have charged an Oregon woman with attempted murder after authorities alleged she deliberately set a vehicle on fire while two people slept inside at a truck stop in San Bernardino County.
The fire erupted shortly after midnight at a Pilot travel center in Hesperia, transforming what authorities describe as a personal dispute into a potentially deadly incident. Investigators say the vehicle contained equipment capable of intensifying the fire, making the situation especially dangerous. Despite the explosion that followed, everyone involved survived, and officials reported no life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said the suspect had been traveling with a group returning from Southern California. During the trip, an argument reportedly developed between the woman and vehicle owner James Bahr. Bahr later told investigators the confrontation escalated while he was driving. After stopping at the truck stop, he ordered the woman out of the vehicle and began unloading her belongings.
What happened next is now central to the criminal case. Bahr alleges he smelled gas while standing near the vehicle and then watched as the suspect ignited the area around the SUV. Investigators say the Honda Element contained propane tanks and pyrotechnic equipment associated with Bahr’s profession as a certified pyrotechnician. The fire spread rapidly, leaving little time for those inside to react.
Two occupants sleeping inside the vehicle managed to escape moments before a propane tank exploded. The blast intensified the fire and damaged another nearby vehicle. Witnesses described seeing flames consume the vehicles within seconds. Emergency crews responded to extinguish the blaze, but both vehicles were heavily damaged by the time firefighters brought the situation under control.
Investigators credited witness accounts with helping identify a suspect. Several people at the truck stop reportedly observed a woman leaving the area after the fire started. Deputies later located and arrested the suspect nearby. She was booked on charges that include attempted murder and arson, reflecting the danger posed to the occupants who were asleep when the fire began.
The case highlights the risks associated with fires involving fuel sources and specialized equipment. Fire investigators are examining physical evidence from the scene to determine exactly how the blaze spread and how quickly conditions became life-threatening. Prosecutors are expected to rely on witness statements, forensic findings, and surveillance footage as the case moves through the court system.
For those who survived, the incident remains a shocking close call. The sleeping occupants escaped with only seconds to spare before the explosion occurred. Authorities say the investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence and preparing the case for future court hearings.
