Driver Killed After SUV Slams Into Home and Resident Opens Fire, Authorities Say

Deputies say the driver died after the vehicle struck a home and injured two people inside.

SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. β€” A homeowner shot and killed a driver after an SUV crashed into a San Tan Valley house Wednesday evening, according to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash and shooting left one man dead, two residents injured and detectives sorting through unanswered questions about why the SUV entered the home. The driver was 34-year-old Jewell Vaughn, whose family described him as a father of five and a grandfather.

Deputies responded shortly after 6:30 p.m. to a neighborhood in the Copper Basin area, near Hunt Highway and Magma Road. Authorities also described the scene as a home on Morenci Road near Hunt Highway and Coppermine Road. The sheriff’s office said multiple 911 calls came in after the SUV struck the house.

Inside the home, an adult man and adult woman were hurt in the crash. Deputies said one of the residents then shot Vaughn. Medical workers pronounced him dead a short time later. Officials have not released a full sequence of what happened between the crash and the shooting.

The male resident was detained and interviewed by sheriff’s detectives before he was released. He was later transported to a Valley hospital for treatment. The woman also was taken to a hospital. Both residents were expected to survive, according to reports from authorities.

Investigators have not said whether Vaughn knew the residents, why he was in the neighborhood or whether the crash was intentional. They also have not publicly said what evidence has been collected from the SUV, the home or nearby witnesses.

Vaughn’s family released a statement mourning his death. β€œHis spirit, smile and the impact he made on those who knew him will never be forgotten,” the family said. The statement also thanked those who had shown love as relatives processed the loss.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing. When detectives finish, the case will be sent to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office, where prosecutors will review whether any criminal charges are warranted.
