Employee Killed, Another Shot in Jackson Food Mart Robbery

Regular customers said the employees at Sally Food Mart were treated like family.

JACKSON, Miss. — A West Jackson food mart remained closed Friday after an armed robbery killed one employee and wounded another around 1 a.m. at Sally Food Mart on North Flag Chapel Road.

The shooting turned a familiar neighborhood stop into a crime scene. Jackson police said two male employees were shot during the robbery. One died, and the other was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Police said officers and robbery and homicide detectives responded to the business after reports of an armed robbery. Early information described the suspects as two Black men wearing ski masks. No arrests had been announced Friday morning.

Customers who came by later found caution tape across the entrance. Kameron Wsaey, a regular customer, said the workers treated people with respect and often helped customers who were short on money. “We looked at them like they were family,” Wsaey said.

Another customer, identified as Diamond, said the violence made no sense because the store served people in the area. Coney, who had left shortly before the shooting, said she heard several loud shots after reaching home.

Police had not released the name of the employee who died, pending family notification. Investigators also had not released the name of the injured worker or said whether any money or property was taken.

The case is being handled as a homicide and aggravated assault. Police said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives review evidence and seek information tied to the masked suspects.

As of Sunday, the store shooting remained under investigation, with no public announcement of arrests or victim names.
