Police said a Hyde Park man faces murder and carjacking charges after a woman was killed on Blue Hill Avenue.
BOSTON, Mass. — A 37-year-old Hyde Park man is expected in court after police said he stole a car, drove onto a Mattapan sidewalk Saturday and fatally struck a woman before bystanders restrained him.
Ibraim Matos faces charges including murder, carjacking, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury. Boston police said the incident began about 1:59 p.m. Saturday on Blue Hill Avenue and ended near an MBTA bus, where community members held Matos until officers arrived.
Police said the first call came from the area of 1466 Blue Hill Avenue. Officers responding to District B-3 found an unresponsive adult woman on the ground. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name had not been released as of Monday morning. Investigators said the chain of events began after an apparent crash near Blue Hill Avenue and Woodhaven Street.
After that crash, police said, Matos got out of a damaged vehicle and went to a nearby car wash at 1480 Blue Hill Avenue. A woman waiting there told police he pulled her from her car and drove away in it. Witness Javier Fernandez said the suspect opened the woman’s door and forced her out. Fernandez said the driver then reversed, entered the wrong side of the road and headed toward Mattapan Square.
Police said the stolen car moved at high speed along Blue Hill Avenue and onto the sidewalk before striking the pedestrian near 1629 Blue Hill Avenue. Surveillance video showed the woman trying to run from the vehicle before impact. The car later hit another vehicle near Fairway Street and then struck an MBTA bus, police said.
Witness Dailina Duverne said the bus helped stop the driver. “The bus saved a lot of people’s lives because he was out of control,” Duverne told WBZ-TV. She said several bystanders pulled Matos from the vehicle and held him down as he tried to get away.
When officers reached the crash scene, they found a large crowd around the vehicle. Police said Matos was taken into custody and brought to a hospital for treatment. The carjacking victim survived, and police did not release further details about her condition.
Matos was expected to be arraigned Monday in Dorchester District Court. Police said homicide investigators continued reviewing video, witness statements and crash evidence along Blue Hill Avenue.
