Couple Killed In Suspected Gang Ambush At Greenfield Gas Station

Two South Monterey County residents were killed late Monday at a Fastrip station on El Camino Real.

GREENFIELD, Calif. — Greenfield police are investigating the fatal shooting of two people at a gas station late Monday, after officers found Elizabeth Saavedra, 32, and Aldo Juan Manjujano, 26, shot at the Fastrip on El Camino Real.

The killings have shaken a small South Monterey County city and opened a double homicide case built around surveillance video, witness accounts and camera data. Police said the shooting happened about 10:50 p.m. June 22 at 145 El Camino Real, a busy commercial stretch near Oak Avenue.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Coroner Office identified the victims Tuesday as Saavedra, of Soledad, and Manjujano, of King City. Greenfield police said the first officer arrived 53 seconds after the first 911 call. Detectives then took over the case and began gathering video from the station and nearby city cameras. “Our thoughts remain with their families and loved ones during this difficult time,” the department said in an update.

Police have not announced arrests or named any suspects. Investigators said there was no known ongoing threat to the public, but they continued to seek people who were at the gas station when the shooting happened. KSBW, citing law enforcement sources, reported that investigators were looking at the case as a targeted gang-related ambush. Greenfield police had not publicly confirmed a motive by Wednesday.

The scene drew a large police response after reports of many gunshots in the area. Officers and detectives reviewed footage from the gas station, along with Greenfield’s Flock and Surveillance Grid camera systems. Police said that technology produced significant leads. Officials have not released the number of shooters, the type of weapon used or whether the victims were inside or near a vehicle when they were hit.

The case is being led by the Greenfield Police Department. The Sheriff’s Coroner Office said further questions about the circumstances of the killings should go to Greenfield police. No court dates had been set because no arrests had been announced. The next major step is the identification of suspects and the review of witness video, surveillance footage and physical evidence from the station.

The Fastrip sits along El Camino Real, one of Greenfield’s main routes through town. On Tuesday, the killing site became the focus of a homicide investigation that stretched beyond the parking lot, as officers checked cameras and searched for people who may have seen the attack. The deaths connected three Salinas Valley communities: Greenfield, where the shooting happened; Soledad, where Saavedra lived; and King City, where Manjujano lived.

As of Wednesday, June 24, police had not reported an arrest. The investigation remains active, with Greenfield detectives seeking witness accounts, images and video from the area around the time of the shooting.
