Police charged an 18-year-old driver and a passenger after the Father’s Day crash.
BEACHWOOD, Ohio — A 3-year-old girl died after a vehicle drove into the outdoor dining area of City Barbeque at the Pavilion Shopping Center on Sunday, June 21, while she was eating with family members, police said.
The crash has led to criminal charges against two Euclid residents and left the restaurant closed while police continue to investigate. Beachwood police said the driver, 18-year-old Jasmine McFadden, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. Kenneth McFadden, 61, who police said was in the front passenger seat, also faces charges.
Police said the crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. in the shopping center parking lot. Investigators said Jasmine McFadden was driving through the lot when the vehicle left the road, crossed a curb and entered the outdoor dining area. The vehicle struck the child, who was taken to Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital and later died from her injuries. In 911 calls reported by local news outlets, a caller told dispatchers that the person struck appeared to be “a baby.”
The child’s name has not been released. Police said the crash remains under investigation, including what caused the vehicle to leave the travel lane and enter the patio area. Court records cited in local reports said Jasmine McFadden was operating the vehicle without a license. She appeared Monday, June 22, in Shaker Heights Municipal Court, where her bond was set at $100,000. Her case was bound over to Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
Kenneth McFadden was charged with obstructing official business and wrongful entrustment. Police said he first told officers he had been driving the vehicle before investigators determined Jasmine McFadden was behind the wheel. He is scheduled for arraignment July 13 in Shaker Heights Municipal Court. Kenneth McFadden is a former Cleveland State University basketball standout who helped lead the school to the 1986 Sweet 16.
City Barbeque said in a statement that it was “heartbroken by the tragic incident” and offered condolences to the child’s loved ones and others affected. The company said it is cooperating with local authorities and supporting employees and the community. Corporate officials said the Beachwood restaurant remains closed, with no reopening timeline announced.
Beachwood police said the crash affected family members, witnesses, first responders, restaurant workers and others at the shopping center. The department said it extends condolences to the child’s family and loved ones as investigators continue to review the facts. No additional injuries have been publicly detailed.
The case now moves through the county court system as police examine the crash and related charges. The next known court date is Kenneth McFadden’s July 13 arraignment.
