Police said the victim was part of a moving crew at a west Houston apartment complex.
HOUSTON, Texas — A 33-year-old man has been charged after police said a woman was fatally struck by a box truck Thursday afternoon at a west Houston apartment complex following an argument.
Houston police identified the suspect as Keith Bembry Sims. He is charged with manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid in an accident resulting in death. Police said the woman, 31, died at the scene in the 2400 block of South Gessner Road.
Officers were called to 2401 South Gessner Road about 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Houston Fire Department paramedics found the woman and pronounced her dead. Lt. Larry Crowson said officers were told a three-person moving crew had arrived at the apartment complex for a scheduled job before an argument broke out between a man and a woman on the crew.
Police said witnesses reported the man and woman had been in a dating relationship. Investigators said the man got into the box truck and struck the woman. Crowson said a third member of the moving crew remained at the scene and spoke with officers. The victim’s name has not been released pending family notification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Investigators said surveillance video showed the truck striking the woman. A short time later, officers located the box truck and detained Sims without incident. Detectives with the Houston Police Department Homicide Division consulted the Harris County District Attorney’s Office before charges were filed.
Sims is charged in two Harris County criminal district courts. The manslaughter charge was filed in the 337th Criminal District Court, while the failure to stop and render aid charge was filed in the 185th Criminal District Court. Police have not released details on when Sims is expected to make his first court appearance.
The case remained under investigation Friday. Police have not released the victim’s identity, and officials have not said whether more evidence or witness statements could affect the charges.
