ST. GEORGE, Utah — A nearly 20-year-old murder case tied to a fatal fall at Zion National Park ended before trial after the accused husband, former Las Vegas youth pastor David Vander Meer, died in custody.
The case centered on the death of Bernadette Vander Meer, who fell from Angels Landing during an anniversary trip with her husband on Aug. 22, 2006. Her death was long treated as an accident, but prosecutors later alleged it was a killing.
Washington County prosecutors said the investigation was reopened after new tips raised questions about Vander Meer’s conduct before and after the hike. Court records described allegations of infidelity, misconduct involving a former youth group member and a major life insurance increase before the fall.
The couple had traveled from Las Vegas to Zion National Park and started the hike before dawn. Vander Meer told investigators at the time that his wife was near the edge as he prepared to take a picture and that she was gone when he turned back.
Years later, investigators said witness statements gave them a new view of motive. One woman told authorities Vander Meer had been involved with her when she was a teenager and had made a comment suggesting Bernadette would have to die for them to be together.
Financial records also became a key part of the case. Prosecutors said life insurance coverage had grown from about $150,000 to roughly $550,000 before Bernadette’s death, and Vander Meer later collected more than $567,000.
Vander Meer was arrested in Las Vegas this week and was awaiting extradition to Utah on charges of murder and insurance fraud. His death from self-inflicted injuries halted the case before a preliminary hearing or trial could test the allegations in court.
Bernadette Vander Meer’s death remains the central fact of a case that moved from a closed accident file to a murder charge nearly two decades later. No trial date will be set after David Vander Meer’s death.
