Police said officers rushed the 7-month-old girl to a hospital after the Friday afternoon shooting.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A 7-month-old girl died Friday after she was shot inside a home in north St. Louis, police said, sending homicide and child abuse detectives to the Baden neighborhood.
The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. in the 8400 block of North Broadway, near Halls Ferry Road. Police said officers found the baby with a gunshot wound and drove her to a hospital in a police SUV while trying to save her life. She was later pronounced dead.
St. Louis police spokesperson Mitch McCoy said the scene was contained inside the home and that police were not searching for an outside suspect. He said adults and juveniles were inside the home when the shooting happened. Investigators said they do not believe the infant shot herself.
Officers used what police described as a fast emergency transport, placing the child in the back seat of a police vehicle. One officer stayed with the baby and continued lifesaving care while other officers blocked traffic to clear the route to the hospital.
Police said a gun was found inside the home. Homicide detectives and child abuse investigators were assigned to the case. No charges had been announced by Saturday, and police had not released the child’s name or said who fired the weapon.
The shooting was the second fatal shooting of a minor in St. Louis in the same week. Community leaders said the death added to concern about children caught in gun violence across the city. Police said the infant was the 26th juvenile shot in St. Louis this year.
The investigation remained active Saturday as detectives reviewed the scene, interviewed people who were in the home and worked to determine how the gun was fired.
