73-Year-Old Man Charged After Girlfriend Found Shot Dead

Police said Angela Gray was found inside a Mallard Drive home Thursday afternoon.

TEXAS CITY, Texas — A 73-year-old man was charged with murder after police found a 42-year-old woman fatally shot inside a Texas City home Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Lee Sims is accused in the death of Angela Gray, who police said was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in the 7200 block of Mallard Drive. The case moved from a welfare concern to a homicide investigation after officers arrived shortly before 3 p.m.

Police said a woman contacted officers after a troubling phone call with Gray. The caller told investigators she heard Gray and Sims arguing, then heavy breathing, before Gray stopped communicating. Investigators said Sims later told a neighbor he shot Gray in self-defense. Multiple friends told investigators Sims and Gray had been dating and that Gray had recently moved into his home.

Court records describe home surveillance video showing two people walking into a garage before a door slammed shut and two gunshots were heard. Gray was later found dead in the living room, according to the criminal complaint. Investigators said Sims had a gun concealed in his waistband when officers found him.

Gray was a nurse at an assisted living facility and the mother of two, according to friends and family. Records show Sims had been licensed as a security officer until last year. Authorities said he had no criminal history in Texas.

Sims was being held in the Galveston County Jail on a $250,000 bond. Police said the investigation remains active, and detectives are still reviewing evidence tied to the shooting, the phone call and the home surveillance recording.

The next step in the case is expected to move through Galveston County court records as prosecutors review the murder charge and investigators complete reports on the shooting.
