Teen Accused in Online Jewelry Sale Ambush That Shot Father, Son

Police say the meeting was a robbery plot tied to an online marketplace sale.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — An 18-year-old man has been arrested after police said a planned robbery disguised as an online jewelry sale ended with a father and son shot on the Southwest Side.

Jacob Farias Jr. is accused of taking part in the June 17 shooting on Baywell Drive, near Southwest Loop 410 and Valley High Drive. Police said the victims arrived for what they believed was a jewelry sale arranged online before three people approached their vehicle and demanded money.

According to an arrest affidavit cited by police, the meetup was not a routine sale but a robbery plan. Investigators said at least one suspect pulled a gun and fired at the men. One of the victims, who police said was also armed, returned fire during the confrontation. The elder victim, a man in his 60s, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including an apparent wound to the head. A second man, in his 20s, was also shot.

The San Antonio Fire Department first reported that both men were in critical condition. Later reports said they were stable at a hospital. Police have said the two victims are believed to be related, and later reports identified them as father and son. Their names have not been released.

Police said three suspects ran from the scene after the shooting. Officers searched the area but did not find them that night. Farias was later identified in the investigation and arrested. Police have not publicly released full details on how investigators connected him to the case or whether additional arrests have been made.

The shooting happened in a residential area, and neighbors told local reporters they did not know a jewelry exchange had been arranged near their homes. Witnesses reported seeing people run after gunfire broke out. Investigators have not said whether any jewelry or money was taken.

The case remains active as detectives review evidence from the online exchange, witness accounts and the shooting scene. Police have not released the names of the other suspects. Court records tied to the affidavit are expected to guide the next steps in the case.

Farias remained the only named suspect in public reports as of Sunday. Police said the investigation is continuing.
