The shooting unfolded early Sunday near Harmon Avenue and Charles Willard Street.
CARSON, Calif. — One man was killed and six other people were wounded early Sunday when gunfire broke out during an illegal street takeover in Carson, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.
The shooting turned a crowded late-night gathering into a homicide investigation. Deputies were called about 3 a.m. to the area of Charles Willard Street and Harmon Avenue, where authorities said numerous onlookers had gathered as vehicles took over the intersection.
When deputies arrived, they found three people with gunshot wounds. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were taken to a hospital in critical condition after Los Angeles County Fire Department crews treated victims at the location.
Sheriff’s officials later said four more gunshot victims had taken themselves to local hospitals. Their injuries were described as not life-threatening. At least one victim was 16, though officials had not said whether that teen was among the critically injured.
Authorities had not released the name of the man who died. Family members told one local station he was 22. Officials had not announced an arrest, released a suspect description or said what led to the shooting.
Investigators said the large crowd may be central to the case. “There were numerous onlookers present,” the sheriff’s department said, adding that detectives were seeking information from people who were at the takeover when shots were fired.
The shooting adds to concern over street takeovers, which often draw drivers, spectators and video recorders to intersections after dark. The gatherings can block roads, delay emergency crews and leave bystanders close to reckless driving, crashes or violence.
By Monday, sheriff’s homicide detectives were still working to identify the shooter or shooters and determine whether the gunfire was tied to the takeover itself, a dispute in the crowd or another cause.
