Toddler’s Death Was First Reported as Drowning. Now His Mother Faces Murder Charge

Melissa Lynn Beisel is charged with murder and remains held without bail.

PLACENTIA, Calif. — The father of a 2-year-old Orange County boy said he wants the child’s mother punished to the fullest extent after she was charged with murder in the toddler’s death.

L.J., who asked that his full name not be used, spoke after Melissa Lynn Beisel, 41, of Fresno, appeared in court Tuesday and did not enter a plea. Beisel is accused in the death of her son, Aidan, at a Placentia home on Sept. 22, 2025.

The case began as a reported drowning but later became a homicide investigation. Officers had responded to a home near Main Street and Santa Fe Avenue after a 911 call. Aidan was taken to a hospital, where he died. Prosecutors later said investigators ruled out drowning as the cause, though the exact cause of death has not been publicly released.

L.J. said he thought Aidan was napping before he made the discovery inside the bathroom. “I was just knocking on the door like, ‘Are you still in there?’” he said. He told NBCLA he found Beisel in the shower with Aidan and tried to pull the child out. “It hit pretty hard,” he said.

Authorities said Beisel never called police. Prosecutors said the father called 911 after finding her in the shower with the child. Investigators said Beisel had superficial stab wounds to her neck and arms when officers arrived. Police earlier said she had remained in the bathroom for hours before she was taken into custody.

Beisel told detectives last year that she was bathing Aidan in a storage bin used as a bathtub inside a walk-in shower and had stepped away for about two minutes to get soap. Police initially arrested her on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse causing great bodily injury.

Months later, prosecutors filed a murder charge and one felony count of assault on a child with force likely to produce great bodily injury resulting in death. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said the case had caused deep grief for everyone who loved Aidan and praised first responders, police, medical workers and prosecutors involved in the investigation.

L.J. described Aidan as energetic and full of life, a child who liked running around and going to the park. He said he still wakes up hoping the events are a bad dream. “I have a million ‘Why’ questions but I’m probably not going to get answers to any one of them,” he said.

If convicted, Beisel faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Her attorney said there would be no public comment after Tuesday’s court appearance.

Beisel remains held without bail and is scheduled to return to court Aug. 28.
