Gunmen Kill Two, Wound Two At Auburn Gresham Station

Chicago police said four suspects fled through an alley after the early morning attack.

CHICAGO, Ill. β€” Four people were shot, two of them fatally, when gunmen opened fire early Thursday outside a gas station in Auburn Gresham, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened about 12:23 a.m. in the 7600 block of South Halsted Street. Police said four people were standing outside when four suspects walked up and began shooting. No arrests had been announced, and Area Two detectives were investigating.

A 53-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where both were pronounced dead, police said. A 35-year-old woman was shot several times in the leg, and a 33-year-old man was shot several times in the body. Both were also taken to the same hospital in critical condition.

Police said the attackers ran away on foot through a nearby alley after the shooting. Surveillance video from the scene showed someone walking up to two men before the gunfire. The video was stopped before the shots, and the faces of the men who were targeted were blurred.

Investigators placed dozens of evidence markers around the gas station as they worked to determine what happened before the attack. Police had not released a motive, and officials had not said whether the victims were targeted or caught in the gunfire.

A neighborhood resident who said one of the victims was his friend described him as funny and well liked. β€œHe was a good, good person,” another friend said, adding that he was often smiling and working to make money.

Reality Allah, a neighborhood violence interrupter, said the shooting was unexpected because the area had been calm. He said there had not been much known conflict among groups in that part of Auburn Gresham before the attack.

Police said no other injuries were reported. Area Two detectives continued reviewing evidence Friday as they searched for the four suspects.
