Police said the death is being investigated as a homicide after early morning injuries raised questions.
SAN DIEGO — San Diego police opened a homicide investigation Thursday after a man was found injured in a center median on Nimitz Boulevard in Point Loma and later died at a hospital.
The case began about 1:50 a.m. in the 4400 block of Nimitz Boulevard, where a driver saw the man in the roadway median and called 911. Police said the man’s injuries did not appear consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Officers found the man in the median after the emergency call and had him taken to a local hospital. Sgt. David Garren said the man was later pronounced dead. Police had not released the man’s name, age or city of residence as of the latest public update.
Garren said investigators were treating the death as a homicide because of the nature of the man’s injuries. He said the case appeared to involve a targeted attack and did not appear random. Police did not announce any arrests or name a suspect.
Homicide detectives remained at the scene Thursday, collecting evidence along a busy stretch of Nimitz Boulevard near West Point Loma Boulevard and Tennyson Street. Authorities did not say where the attack may have started or how long the man had been in the median before he was found.
The investigation was still in its early stages, with police working to determine what happened before the driver’s 911 call. Detectives were expected to review nearby evidence, speak with possible witnesses and await the medical examiner’s findings.
Police said no further details about a suspect, motive or weapon were immediately available. The next major update is expected when authorities identify the man or announce new findings in the homicide case.
