Woman Claims Self-Defense After Veteran Shot In Walmart Lot

Broward detectives are reviewing a woman’s self-defense claim after the death of Bart Diguglielmo.

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 62-year-old Lauderhill man died after a woman shot him during an argument over a parking space outside a North Lauderdale Walmart on June 30, Broward sheriff’s officials said.

Bart Diguglielmo was found with a gunshot wound shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart at 7900 W. McNab Road. Deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews responded after a 911 call reported the shooting.

Authorities said Diguglielmo and the woman had argued over a parking space before the shooting. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The woman stayed at the scene, cooperated with detectives and said she fired in self-defense, sheriff’s officials said.

The woman’s name has not been released, and she was not arrested at the scene. Homicide detectives are reviewing witness statements and video from the parking lot. Officials have not said whether investigators believe the self-defense claim or whether Diguglielmo was armed.

Video reported by local stations showed part of the confrontation before the gunfire. The footage appeared to show the woman with a gun as Diguglielmo moved near her in the parking lot. A single gunshot was heard in one clip, and Diguglielmo fell afterward.

Witness David Anderson told CBS Miami he arrived to shop and saw crime scene tape across the lot. “I was walking up and heard a lady screaming,” Anderson said. “She was screaming and she was saying a lot of things.”

Diguglielmo’s family described him as a military veteran, retired nurse and father of three. His daughter, Amanda, told Local 10 News that no one “deserves to lose their life over a parking spot.”

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said the case will be sent to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office after detectives finish their investigation. Prosecutors will decide whether criminal charges should be filed.
