Police said a large quantity of fireworks ignited on D Street and set a vehicle on fire.
CHINO, Calif. — Four people, including a child, were injured Friday night when fireworks exploded during a July Fourth gathering on D Street, police said.
The blast happened about 8:30 p.m. as a large group had gathered for a fireworks display. Chino police said detectives believe a large quantity of fireworks ignited, causing the explosion, seriously injuring three adults and a child, and setting a vehicle on fire.
The three adults remained hospitalized with severe injuries Sunday. The child’s condition had not been released. Video from the neighborhood showed people running from the street as flames burned through a vehicle. In one recording from the scene, a person could be heard shouting, “Back up, back up, back up … everybody get back!”
Video from above the scene showed debris scattered across a front yard and nearby street after the explosion. Witness Gabriel Gilmore said he was inside his mother’s home when he heard the blast and rushed outside. Gilmore said it appeared fireworks were inside a vehicle’s trunk, though police had not confirmed exactly how the fireworks caught fire.
Investigators searched the neighborhood Saturday night and early Sunday as they worked to determine what led to the blast. The Chino Police Department is leading the case with help from the Chino Valley Fire District. No arrests or citations had been announced.
Chino allows “safe and sane” fireworks during a limited July Fourth window, but the city fines possession or use of illegal fireworks. City rules also restrict where fireworks may be discharged, including bans in public parks and several parts of the city.
The investigation remained open Sunday, with police still reviewing what happened before the explosion and how the fireworks ignited.
