NEW YORK — A 46-year-old man died after he was shot in the head Monday night near White Plains Road and Archer Street in the Parkchester section of the Bronx, police said.
The shooting happened just after 8 p.m. in a busy commercial area. Emergency medical workers took the man to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition, and he later died. Police had not announced an arrest by Tuesday morning.
Investigators focused on the area near 1503 White Plains Road, where the shooting unfolded in front of a liquor store. Surveillance video reviewed by local media showed the victim standing with a group before a gunman approached, touched him with the weapon and fired. Police said the motive was not immediately known.
Crime scene officers marked evidence on the sidewalk and worked through the evening near the intersection. The shooting drew police vehicles and onlookers to a stretch of White Plains Road lined with stores, apartment buildings and regular bus traffic.
The case remains under investigation by the NYPD. Detectives are reviewing video, speaking with witnesses and working to identify the shooter. Officials have not released further details about the weapon or what led up to the attack.
The victim’s name was not immediately released in early police reports. The next major step is an identification from authorities and any update on a possible suspect.
