Dallas Bystander Killed When Masked Ambush Goes Horribly Wrong

Security cameras captured a suspect before and after Myron Henry was shot.

DALLAS, Texas — Security video is driving the search for three masked suspects accused of killing Myron Henry during a June 9 shooting at a Pleasant Grove strip mall, Dallas police said.

The video places one suspect near Henry before the violence began, then shows the same person apparently returning masked with two others, police said. Investigators said Henry was an innocent bystander who ran from the first burst of gunfire and was killed when he encountered the third suspect near an alley.

Police said Henry was outside Bruton Road Food, Beer & Wine at 2015 North Masters Road around 6:30 p.m. when a man wearing a white shirt and dark shorts walked past him. About 20 minutes later, a Jeep Grand Cherokee entered an alley near the store. Two masked suspects got out with semiautomatic rifles. A third masked suspect followed. Investigators said that third person appeared to be the man recorded earlier without a mask. Detective Cayce Shelton said someone should know him by sight.

The first two gunmen moved past Henry and began firing at another group of people, police said. One person in that group was struck and survived. Henry ran toward the alley after hearing the shots, then bumped into the third suspect. Police said the third suspect shot Henry. As the men fled back to the vehicle, one suspect fired toward Henry’s body, investigators said.

The shooting has given detectives two tracks to follow: the intended target of the first gunfire and the killing of Henry, who police said was caught in the attack by mistake. Officials have not released a motive, the identity of the wounded survivor or the names of any suspects. They also have not said whether the Jeep was stolen, borrowed or connected to any person already known to investigators.

The Pleasant Grove case is now part of a Trackdown appeal, a public effort used to put images and case details before people who may recognize suspects. Police said the clearest image is of the third suspect before he covered his face. Shelton described the men as “evil” and said investigators believe the video could help move the case forward.

The shooting happened in a commercial area where store cameras captured the suspects’ approach, the gunfire and the escape route. Those recordings are now part of the evidence police are using to build the timeline. Investigators said the men arrived together, opened fire within minutes and left in the same vehicle after Henry was killed.

As of Thursday, July 9, Dallas police had not announced arrests. Detectives continued working to identify the gunmen, trace the Jeep Grand Cherokee and determine why the first group was targeted.
