The 19-year-old’s vehicle had unexpectedly stopped near FM 529 and the Grand Parkway after an apparent roadway shooting.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A family using a tracking device to locate their 19-year-old son found his stopped vehicle near the Grand Parkway early Friday, where deputies later determined he had been fatally shot while driving, authorities said.
The vehicle had a GPS tracking device that alerted the family when it unexpectedly stopped, according to investigators. Family members located the car near FM 529 and State Highway 99 and contacted emergency authorities.
Harris County sheriff’s deputies arrived shortly before 3 a.m. and found the teenager in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name had not been released as of Saturday.
Investigators said the young man appeared to have been driving west on FM 529 toward the Grand Parkway before the shooting. A gray sedan was believed to have traveled alongside his vehicle on the passenger side as several shots were fired into the car.
The victim’s vehicle was still running when it was found. Detectives examined it and the surrounding roadway for evidence that could help identify the sedan or establish where it went after the gunfire.
Authorities have not said how much time passed between the GPS alert and the family’s arrival. They also have not released information about whether anyone else witnessed the shooting or provided investigators with a license plate number.
The circumstances leading to the gunfire remain unknown. Investigators had not determined whether the encounter involved road rage, a planned attack or a dispute between people who knew one another.
No suspect description had been released beyond the reference to an apparent gray sedan. Officials also had not reported an arrest or identified a possible motive.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office continued its homicide investigation Saturday. The victim’s identity and additional findings were expected to remain withheld until authorities completed notification and verification procedures.
