The child was sitting in a parked car with two siblings when gunfire struck several vehicles early Tuesday.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 12-year-old girl was wounded when gunfire struck a parked car carrying her and two siblings outside a northwest Miami-Dade home early Tuesday, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded shortly before 1 a.m. to the area of Northwest 64th Street and Northwest 21st Avenue in Gladeview. Investigators found three vehicles damaged by gunfire, including the silver Hyundai in which the children had been sitting.
The girl was struck in the arm, authorities said. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took her to a nearby hospital in stable condition. A family member later told Local 10 News that she had returned home and was doing well.
The girl’s two siblings were inside the car but were not injured. Their mother was standing outside the vehicle when the shooting occurred and also escaped injury, authorities said.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Detective Samantha Choon said the presence of three children in the vehicle could have led to a far more serious result.
“The car was parked outside of the residence. It was occupied by three juveniles, so it was the girl and her two siblings that were in the vehicle,” Choon said. “The mom was outside of the vehicle at the time, so this could have been a very different outcome.”
Investigators had not announced any arrests or released a description of a suspected shooter as of Tuesday. Authorities also had not disclosed what may have led to the gunfire or whether the occupied car was deliberately targeted.
A neighbor, Marie Grimes, said she heard a series of loud sounds during the shooting. She estimated that five or six shots may have been fired and said she was relieved the girl survived.
Detectives asked residents in the area to review surveillance and doorbell-camera recordings made around 1 a.m. Investigators continued working Tuesday to identify whoever fired the shots and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
