Man Charged With Capital Murder in Irondale Double Homicide

Police said the suspect acted alone in the shooting that killed a Texas man and a Birmingham woman.

IRONDALE, Ala. — A 23-year-old Birmingham man is being held without bond on a capital murder charge after two people were fatally shot Sunday night at a home in Irondale, police said.

Laderrick Landen Broadnax was arrested Monday night in Talladega County with help from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office. Irondale police said the charge involves the deaths of two or more people. Broadnax is being held in the Jefferson County Jail.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Andrew David Cole, 33, of Huntsville, Texas, and Alexis Josephine Coates, 32, of Birmingham. Authorities said both suffered multiple gunshot wounds at a home in the 700 block of Stonewall Drive.

Officers were sent to the area at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday after callers reported hearing gunfire. Police found Cole and Coates after arriving at the property. First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but both victims died from their injuries.

Police Lt. Jason Hill said Broadnax and the two victims knew one another. Investigators had not determined the full nature of their relationship or explained why the three were at the Stonewall Drive home when the shooting occurred.

Authorities also were working to determine whether Broadnax, Cole or Coates lived at the property or had gone there as visitors. Police had not announced a suspected motive or released a detailed account of the events leading to the gunfire.

Broadnax was taken into custody at about 9:50 p.m. Monday. Police said federal marshals and Talladega County deputies assisted in finding and arresting him. No injuries were reported during the arrest.

Investigators said the evidence gathered so far indicates Broadnax acted alone. Police were not looking for another suspect and said they did not believe the case posed an ongoing threat to the surrounding community.

The capital murder charge is an allegation, and Broadnax is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court. Authorities had not released information about an initial court appearance, an attorney representing him or additional charges as of Wednesday.

The investigation remains active as detectives examine the relationship among the three people, their reason for being at the house and the circumstances that led to the shooting.
