Three other suspects remained at large after the stolen vehicle struck four vehicles and left four people hospitalized.
CHICAGO — One suspect was taken into custody after a group allegedly broke into a Rogers Park auto repair shop, stole a red SUV and crashed into several vehicles while trying to escape late Tuesday, Chicago police said.
The burglary and crash unfolded about 11:20 p.m. July 14 in the 6800 block of North Clark Street. Police said four people entered the business through the rear and drove away in the SUV, damaging a garage door during the attempted getaway.
Officers responded after an alarm was activated at the business, according to police. One of the four suspects was detained at the scene, while the other three ran away. Authorities had not released descriptions of those who escaped as of Wednesday.
Police said charges were pending against the person in custody. The suspect’s name, age and possible charges had not been announced. Investigators also had not said whether the detained person was accused of driving the stolen SUV or taking part in another aspect of the burglary.
The SUV struck a gray SUV, an occupied black SUV and two parked vehicles as the group tried to leave the area, police said. Authorities did not provide a detailed account of the order of the collisions or say how far the stolen vehicle traveled before it stopped.
Four occupants of the black SUV were taken to hospitals and were listed in good condition. One woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, while two other women and a man were taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, police said.
No injuries were reported among the suspected burglars in the initial police account. Authorities also had not disclosed the extent of the damage to the repair shop, the stolen SUV or the other vehicles involved.
Police described the people involved as four male suspects but released no further identifying information. It was not immediately clear whether investigators recovered additional evidence from the business or nearby vehicles.
The investigation remained active Wednesday as police sought the three suspects who fled. Additional information about charges, the ownership of the SUV and the circumstances of the break-in had not been released.
