Police are investigating why the pole fell before the vehicle caught fire Sunday on Blake Road North.
HOPKINS, Minn. — One person died Sunday after a utility pole fell onto a vehicle in Hopkins and the vehicle caught fire, authorities said, prompting an investigation into what caused the pole to come down.
Hopkins police and firefighters responded just before 5 p.m. to the 300 block of Blake Road North. Authorities said one person was inside the vehicle when the pole fell onto it. The vehicle subsequently caught fire, and the person inside was pronounced dead.
Authorities had not publicly identified the person as of Monday morning. Officials also had not said what caused the utility pole to fall or released details about what happened immediately before it came down. The circumstances remained under investigation.
Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire while emergency crews remained at the scene Sunday evening. Xcel Energy personnel also responded to assess the damaged electrical equipment and address an outage that affected customers in the area.
A nearby resident told CBS Minnesota she heard a loud bang followed by a popping sound before a car alarm began sounding. She later saw white smoke from her apartment. Authorities have not said whether those sounds help explain why the pole fell, and investigators have not announced a cause.
The incident also interrupted electrical service for more than 150 Xcel Energy customers. The utility said Monday morning that service was expected to be restored around 11:45 a.m. as crews worked in the area.
The death remains the central focus of the investigation as police work to determine the sequence of events. Officials have not announced whether a vehicle collision, equipment failure or another factor caused the pole to fall, and no such explanation has been confirmed publicly.
The identity of the person who died had not been released Monday morning. Authorities said the investigation was continuing, with additional information expected as officials determine what caused the pole to fall and complete the identification process.
