Four other people were hospitalized after the late-night collision near 65th Street in Bay Ridge.
NEW YORK — Three teenagers were killed and four other people were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash late Tuesday on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, police said.
The collision was reported about 11:35 p.m. on Aug. 25 along the eastbound parkway near 65th Street and Exit 1 in the Bay Ridge neighborhood. Five teenagers were riding in a black Cadillac Escalade, while two women were in a Honda HR-V traveling on the same stretch of highway.
Police sources said the Cadillac was traveling at a high rate of speed when its driver braked while approaching slower traffic. The Honda then struck the Cadillac from behind, according to the account provided to CBS New York. Investigators were continuing Wednesday to establish the full sequence of events and determine the cause of the crash.
The impact sent the Cadillac into a guardrail before the SUV spun and overturned, police sources said. Three of the five occupants were ejected from the vehicle. They were later identified as Huzayfah Algaheim, 18; Konstantin Gerantidi, 17; and Rehman Abdul, 16. All three died from their injuries.
Police sources said the three teenagers who were ejected had not been wearing seat belts. The two other occupants of the Cadillac, ages 16 and 18, were taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition. Authorities did not immediately release their names.
The two women traveling in the Honda were also taken to a hospital and were reported in stable condition. Their names were not released. Reports from news organizations differed slightly on their reported ages, and police had not publicly clarified that discrepancy Wednesday.
One of the surviving occupants of the Cadillac told investigators that the teenagers had been spending time together at a gas station before leaving to head home and drop people off, according to police sources cited by CBS New York. Investigators had not announced a finding about which factors ultimately caused the crash.
Police sources said investigators had no indication that alcohol was a factor for the Cadillac’s driver, although toxicology testing was expected as part of the investigation. Authorities had not announced any arrests or criminal charges as of Wednesday.
The crash prompted a partial shutdown of the Belt Parkway while police, firefighters and medical crews responded and investigators examined the scene. The roadway later reopened to traffic.
The NYPD continued investigating the collision Wednesday, including the vehicles’ movements before impact and other circumstances surrounding the rollover. No additional fatalities were reported among the four people hospitalized.
