Police are investigating the death of a 22-year-old woman after gunfire was reported early Tuesday on Defoors Ferry Road.
ATLANTA — A 22-year-old woman died after being shot early Tuesday at a northwest Atlanta apartment complex, where homicide investigators were processing a unit and trying to determine who fired the shot and why.
Atlanta police were called to an apartment complex on Defoors Ferry Road around 2 a.m. Sept. 1 after reports of gunfire. Officers did not find the wounded woman when they arrived, according to police information reported from the scene. Investigators later learned that a friend had driven her to Grady Memorial Hospital.
The woman had been shot in the torso and later died from her injuries. Authorities had not publicly released her name Tuesday morning. Her family gathered at Grady after learning of her death as investigators continued trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The investigation was centered on the Westside Court Apartments in the 2100 block of Defoors Ferry Road NW. Police focused attention on an apartment unit at the complex while crime scene investigators collected evidence. The property is in northwest Atlanta near Interstate 75.
Police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident connected to an apartment, but investigators had not determined a motive. Authorities also had not publicly identified the person believed to have fired the shot or announced an arrest.
The man who drove the woman to Grady was taken to Atlanta Police Department headquarters to speak with homicide detectives about what happened. Police had not accused him of a crime, and authorities did not publicly describe his relationship with the woman beyond identifying him as a friend.
The trip to the hospital created a second focus for investigators. Police maintained a presence at Grady as detectives worked to connect information from the hospital with evidence being collected at the apartment complex. Another local report said investigators also examined a vehicle outside the hospital.
Several key details remained unknown Tuesday morning, including what happened immediately before the shooting and whether anyone else was inside the apartment when the gunfire occurred. Police had not released information establishing a motive or publicly named a suspect.
The case remained an active homicide investigation as crime scene personnel continued processing the apartment and detectives worked to reconstruct the events that led to the woman’s death.
