Detectives say a teenager escaped an assault before investigators found the hidden space inside a business complex on North Adair Street.
CORNELIUS, Ore. — Washington County sheriff’s detectives are searching for possible additional victims after investigators found a concealed room inside a Cornelius business complex where authorities say a teenager was physically and sexually assaulted.
The investigation began about 8:30 p.m. Aug. 27, when a juvenile ran to the Cornelius Police Department and reported an assault near the 1600 block of North Adair Street, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Information provided by the teenager led deputies to the Plaza Grande business complex, where they found 42-year-old Daniel Le Brun of Cornelius barricaded inside a business.
Investigators later searched the scene and found a concealed room inside the complex where they believe the alleged crimes occurred. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson David Huey told KXL that the room was part of the building’s original construction but was not open to the public and would have been difficult to locate without knowing it was there. Authorities have not publicly described the evidence recovered from the room.
Detectives say the discovery has raised concern that other victims may not yet have been identified. The Sheriff’s Office said Le Brun had access to children through a memorabilia business, and investigators are trying to determine whether other young people had contact with him under similar circumstances.
The teenager who reported the Aug. 27 assault had visible injuries, Huey told KXL. Authorities have not released the juvenile’s age or identity. Because the case involves a minor and allegations of sexual abuse, officials have provided limited information about the circumstances of the assault.
The Sheriff’s Office said deputies responding to the teenager’s report found Le Brun armed with knives and several weapons described as less-lethal-style guns. He refused to surrender, prompting a response from the agency’s Tactical Negotiations Team, Crisis Negotiations Unit and other specialized personnel. Deputies used a drone to monitor his movements while negotiators attempted to communicate with him.
Tactical officers took Le Brun into custody at about 1 a.m. Aug. 28. The Sheriff’s Office said he was taken to a hospital after ingesting a potentially lethal amount of medication. He was discharged Sept. 1 and transferred to the Washington County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office initially listed allegations of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, first-degree sexual abuse and unlawful use of a weapon. KPTV later reported that Le Brun’s first court appearance included six charges: attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree unlawful sexual penetration and first-degree sexual abuse. The allegations have not been proven in court.
KPTV identified the location connected to the standoff as Crossroads Gaming, a shop inside the Plaza Grande complex. An operations manager told the station that Le Brun had previously been married to the store’s owner and spent time at the business. Other syndicated versions of an earlier report described his business connection differently, and at least one later version said authorities had retracted an initial characterization of him as a store owner. The precise nature of his business relationship remains part of the investigation.
Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the Aug. 27 assault or has information about Le Brun to contact the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit at 503-846-2500 and reference case number 50-26-12158. Investigators also are encouraging parents whose children had contact with Le Brun to speak with them as detectives continue looking for possible additional victims.
