Javon M. Ogden faces reckless homicide and evidence-tampering charges after 21-year-old Dalaysia Brewton was killed Tuesday.
CANTON, Ohio — A judge set a $500,000 bond Thursday for an 18-year-old Canton man charged in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Dalaysia N. Brewton, according to court reporting and Canton police.
Javon M. Ogden was arraigned in Canton Municipal Court on charges of reckless homicide and tampering with evidence. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 10:30 a.m. The charges stem from a shooting Tuesday afternoon at a home in the 600 block of 11th Street NE.
Canton police said officers were sent to the property at about 2:35 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a shooting. Officers found Brewton with a gunshot wound to the head. Canton Fire paramedics tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said patrol officers found Ogden nearby and took him into custody. Authorities have not publicly released a full account of what led to the shooting, and the criminal charges against Ogden are allegations that have not been proven in court.
The reckless homicide charge accuses Ogden of causing Brewton’s death through reckless conduct. He also faces a tampering with evidence charge. A local radio report said the evidence charge is tied to an allegation that a gun was moved after the shooting.
A mechanic who was working at the property heard a gunshot and called 911, according to local reporting. The caller told dispatchers he had been working on a vehicle in the garage when he heard a noise and later saw Brewton on the floor near a back entrance.
The caller also relayed a statement attributed to Ogden about how the gun discharged. Police have not publicly released findings establishing the exact sequence of events, and investigators have not announced a motive or described the relationship between Brewton and Ogden.
The case remains under investigation by Canton police. Ogden’s $500,000 bond and Sept. 9 court date mark the next publicly reported steps in the criminal case as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding Brewton’s death.
