Police say two licensed concealed pistol holders drew firearms during an argument, leaving one dead and two bystanders wounded.
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — A 35-year-old Southfield man was taken into custody after a late-night shooting outside a TGI Fridays left a 58-year-old Inkster woman dead and two uninvolved bystanders wounded, according to Southfield police.
Officers were called at about 11:25 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, to the restaurant at 26299 Evergreen Road after reports of gunfire in the parking lot. Police found the Inkster woman critically wounded. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Authorities had not publicly released her name as of Sunday.
A preliminary police investigation found that the woman and the 35-year-old man became involved in a verbal altercation in the parking lot before both pulled firearms. Police said both had valid concealed pistol licenses. Investigators have not released details about what started the dispute or the circumstances immediately before the weapons were drawn.
The man was taken into custody after the shooting. Police have described him as the suspected shooter, but authorities had not announced criminal charges in the information available Sunday. His name also had not been publicly released. The case remained under investigation, and police have not announced a final determination about responsibility for the gunfire.
Two other people were struck even though police said neither was involved in the confrontation. A 54-year-old Detroit man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to a hospital. Police said he was in serious but stable condition in the latest publicly available update.
A 42-year-old woman from Evans, Georgia, also was wounded. Friends took her to a hospital after she was shot in the upper shoulder and arm area. Police listed her in stable condition. Investigators described both injured people as bystanders rather than participants in the dispute.
The shooting happened in a commercial area along Evergreen Road and brought officers to the restaurant parking lot shortly before midnight. Police said their preliminary findings indicate that the dispute was between the woman who died and the man who was arrested. Authorities said there appeared to be no additional threat to the public after the man was taken into custody.
The fact that both people at the center of the confrontation held concealed pistol licenses is part of the police investigation, but authorities have not said whether either person was legally justified in drawing or firing a weapon. A concealed pistol license by itself does not establish what happened during a particular confrontation, and investigators have not released a complete account of the sequence of shots.
Officials also have not publicly disclosed how many shots were fired, whether investigators recovered multiple firearms or whether surveillance video captured the confrontation.
