Investigators traced a suspect vehicle into Cobb County after a 29-year-old resident was fatally shot during an alleged armed robbery.
ATLANTA — Surveillance video from a Buckhead apartment complex helped Atlanta police identify a suspect vehicle and arrest three men after a resident was fatally shot during what investigators described as a robbery-related encounter early Friday.
Atlanta police said officers were called to 2171 Peachtree Road NE at about 1:39 a.m. Sept. 4 and found a man with a gunshot wound inside a parking deck. Grady emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as 29-year-old Jonquail Myers.
Police later charged Brian Wingo, Charles Lewis and Ky-Mani Goodings with murder and armed robbery. Atlanta police said homicide detectives developed probable cause for the charges during the investigation. All three men were taken to the Fulton County Jail. The charges are allegations, and the case remains under investigation.
Lt. Christapher Butler of the Atlanta Police Department said investigators believe Myers, who lived at the apartment complex, was targeted in an isolated robbery-related incident. Authorities have not publicly released a detailed account of what investigators believe happened immediately before the shooting or what property was allegedly taken.
Apartment management provided investigators with surveillance recordings after the shooting. Butler said cameras captured useful footage in important locations around the property, allowing detectives to move quickly as they tried to identify the people and vehicle connected to the case.
Investigators issued a lookout for a Chevrolet Impala after reviewing evidence gathered at the complex. A vehicle matching the description was later located in Cobb County. Atlanta police said the vehicle was pursued there, and the three occupants were apprehended. Wingo, Lewis and Goodings were then transferred to Atlanta police custody before detectives announced the charges later Friday.
The rapid arrests marked a shift in the investigation within hours of the shooting. Police initially described the people taken into custody as suspects or persons being questioned while homicide investigators worked to establish what had happened. By Friday afternoon, Atlanta police said detectives had found probable cause to charge all three men with murder and armed robbery.
A male associate of Myers was also hurt during the incident, according to police. Authorities said the man was not shot and suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police have not released his name or provided additional details about how he was injured.
The shooting occurred inside a residential parking deck along Peachtree Road in Buckhead, prompting a homicide investigation at the complex during the early morning hours. Police have not announced additional arrests or publicly identified a motive beyond the alleged robbery. Their preliminary account could change as investigators gather more evidence.
The Atlanta Police Department said the homicide investigation remains active. Wingo, Lewis and Goodings face murder and armed robbery charges in connection with Myers’ death, while authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
