Police say Kevin Noble Jr. and Nathaniel B. Harrell died after a shooting Saturday night near Two Notch Road.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities have identified two Columbia men who died after a shooting Saturday night near School House Road and Two Notch Road, as police continue investigating what led to the deadly encounter.
Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford identified the men as Kevin Noble Jr., 34, and Nathaniel B. Harrell, 30. The coroner’s office said the shooting happened Sept. 5 in the area of School House Road at Two Notch Road. Columbia police have said both men were shot during the incident.
Police have described the shooting as an encounter in which the two men shot each other. Authorities have not publicly released additional details explaining what happened before the gunfire, what may have caused the confrontation or whether the two men knew each other.
One of the men died at the scene, while the other was taken to a hospital and later died from his injuries, according to police accounts reported by local news organizations. Officials initially released limited information as investigators worked to determine what happened and confirm the conditions of those involved.
The identification of Noble and Harrell provided the first confirmed names connected to the fatal shooting. The coroner’s office announced their identities Sunday, a day after the incident. Both men were residents of Columbia.
The shooting occurred during a night when Columbia police were also responding to a separate shooting in the Five Points area. Police have said the two cases were unrelated. Three people were injured in the Five Points shooting, which occurred in a Food Lion parking lot on Harden Street.
Authorities have released more information about the Five Points case, including arrests, but the School House Road investigation has remained more limited publicly. Police have not announced a motive in the fatal shooting or released a detailed account of the circumstances that brought Noble and Harrell together before the gunfire.
No additional deaths have been reported in connection with the School House Road case. The investigation remains active, and authorities have said further information will be released as investigators verify additional details.
